My Role: After arriving on the ground in Hilton Head, I conducted interviews with nearly a dozen locals from community leaders to authors to boutique owners. In addition to conducting the necessary research and reporting to pen an in-depth article about the history of Mitchelville, I was simultaneously able to deliver a timely and accurate story about the under-celebrated American treasure that is Geechee/Gullah culture. This article received a gold award (the highest in category) from the North American Travel Journalists Association in their coveted 32nd Annual Excellence in Travel Journalism Awards. <image:caption>Travel - ESSENCE.com The Project: I traveled to New Orleans for a sailing aboard the Disney Wonder cruise ship for this travel assignment. The itinerary included a stop in Cozumel, Mexico with time spent in NOLA ahead of Mardi Gras before returning to NYC. My Role: I initially planned to take this cruise with my toddler son but couldn't due to logistical reasons. I decided to go by myself yet still had an awesome time which allowed me to reflect on my solo trip in a unique way. In this personal essay, I shared the unexpected ways this cruise improved my mental health in a manner that resonated with the audience who may never get invited on a press trip but know all too well what it feels like to be burnt out and in need of a break. My Role: I wrote about two of the darkest times in my 40-something year-old life: trying to have a healthy baby and trying to be a healthy new mom to my baby. My Role: In this fun piece, I rounded up lifestyle influencers who are making a name for themselves in the multi-billion dollar beauty industry. I specifically pitched this story to the digital outlet because Afro-Latina women are tragically omitted from conversations surrounding beauty trends and yet their contributions to beauty, style and pop culture are unquestionable. My Role: I am proud to have pitched this story which my editor immediately loved and allowed me to run with as I saw fit. We so rarely, if ever, get to learn about the masterminds behind the scenes as it relates to beauty trends; especially when those creators are women of color. The Black women featured in this article including Lisa Price and Eunice Johnson, were bold, unapologetic and well ahead of their time. My Role: In this service driven piece which I pitched, I relied heavily on my expertise as the founder and editor of BlackBridalBliss.com. I also used my strong editorial instincts to determine which trends were suitable for the Reflect Beauty audience and was intentional about inclusive imagery (from hair textures to complexions to body types) being included in the article. I am well aware that traditional bridal media outlets focus on a very narrow aesthetic so it was paramount that a much wider audience felt seen and celebrated in this service article. <image:title>My Work - What They Paid For Their Weddings - What They Paid for Their Weddings</image:title>
<image:caption>Wedding/personal finance service article – The New York Times The Project: Six brides of different races, socio-economic backgrounds and geographic locations candidly share what their weddings costs, what categories they spent the most (and the least) on and what – if anything – they would do differently if given the chance. My Role: I pitched, reported and penned this enlightening service article for the Weddings section of the Times. I found all of the featured brides and was able to convince these women to be vulnerable and to reveal the financial breakdowns of their nuptials. After diligent research and reporting, I secured six brides including a same sex couple, a once divorced bride who spent roughly $2,000 on her lowkey city wedding close to home and a young graduate school couple who paid $200,000 for an over-the-top destination affair. Readers learned from first-person accounts that expensive does not always equate to memorable and that some couples actually regret not investing in certain aspects of their “big day”. <image:caption>Entertainment/Culture - ESSENCE The Project: A well-reported roundup of the must-read summer book releases of 2018. In order to execute this story, I established relationships with major book publishers in order to stay abreast of new book projects, vetted several dozens of books to curate a robust selection that appealed to the ESSENCE audience, ensured a balance of genres was featured all before reporting and writing the copy. My Role: As the interim Books Editor of Essence and Essence.com between 2018 and 2019, it was my responsibility to review dozens of books for the brand's audience each month, as well as, cover authors, bookstore owners, book influencers, etc. This spread is an example of the work I completed during this time, in addition to performing my duties as the brand's Research Editor.</image:caption>
